(Also known as Sodium Methanoate)
Category: Inorganic Salt / Buffering Agent / De-icing & Reducing Agent
Description: Sodium Formate (HCOONa) is a white crystalline solid and the sodium salt of formic acid. It is highly soluble in water and exhibits mildly alkaline properties. Sodium formate is widely used as a buffering agent, reducing agent, and de-icing chemical in various industrial processes. It is an important intermediate in dyeing, tanning, and oilfield applications, and serves as a non-chloride-based additive in brines and de-icing formulations.
Applications:
1. Leather & Textile Industry Used as a buffering and neutralizing agent in chrome tanning to improve dye uptake and reduce acidity.
2. Oilfield & Drilling Fluids Used in completion and drilling fluids as a density control additive and non-corrosive brine salt. Provides thermal stability and compatibility with formate-based fluids.
3. De-icing & Anti-freeze Solutions Component of runway de-icers and road de-icing agents, replacing environmentally harmful chlorides.
4. Chemical Industry Intermediate for manufacturing formic acid, oxalic acid, and sodium hydrosulfite. Used as a reducing agent in dye and printing processes.
5. Food Industry (Technical Grades Only) Used as a preservative and buffering agent in certain food-grade formulations (subject to regulations).
