Category:
Fatty Acid / Chemical Intermediate / Antimicrobial Agent
Description:
Octoic Acid, commonly known as Caprylic Acid (C₈h4₆O₂), is a colorless to slightly yellow oily liquid with a mild rancid odor. It is a naturally occurring medium-chain fatty acid found in coconut oil, palm kernel oil, and milk fats. Caprylic acid is widely used in the production of esters, surfactants, lubricants, plasticizers, and antimicrobial formulations. It exhibits strong antibacterial and antifungal properties, making it valuable in food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic applications.
Applications:
1. Chemical & Industrial Uses Used as a raw material for esters, emollients, and plasticizers. Serves as an intermediate in the manufacture of surfactants and lubricants.
2. Food & Pharmaceutical Industry Acts as a preservative and antimicrobial agent in food-grade formulations. Used in dietary supplements, MCT oils, and pharmaceutical excipients.
3. Cosmetics & Personal Care Used in skin-conditioning agents, emulsifiers, and emollients. Provides antimicrobial stability in creams, lotions, and shampoos.
4. Agriculture & Veterinary Applications Acts as a natural pesticide and antifungal compound. Used in animal feed additives for gut health improvement.
