Category:
Organic Acid Anhydride / Chemical Intermediate / Polymer Raw Material
Description:
Maleic Anhydride (C₄h4O₃) is a white crystalline solid with a pungent, acrid odor. It is the anhydride of maleic acid and is produced by the oxidation of benzene or n-butane. It is a highly reactive chemical intermediate, primarily used in the manufacture of unsaturated polyester resins (UPR), alkyd resins, and co-polymers. Maleic anhydride reacts readily with alcohols, amines, and water, forming esters, amides, and maleic acid respectively — making it a versatile building block for numerous industrial products.
Applications:
1. Unsaturated Polyester Resins (UPR) Key raw material for fiberglass-reinforced plastics, marine parts, and automotive components.
2. Alkyd and Epoxy Resins Used to modify resins for improved hardness and chemical resistance.
3. Co-polymers and Plastic Additives Reacts with monomers such as styrene, acrylic acid, or butadiene to form copolymers used in adhesives, coatings, and lubricants.
4. Agricultural Chemicals Intermediate for fumaric acid, malic acid, and plant growth regulators.
5. Surfactants and Detergents Used in the manufacture of succinic acid derivatives, dispersants, and surface-active agents. 6. Lubricant Additives Used in polyisobutylene succinic anhydride (PIBSA), a precursor for detergent-dispersant additives in engine oils.
