Description:
Benzoic Acid (C₆H₅COOH) is a white crystalline solid with a slight aromatic odor. It is the simplest aromatic carboxylic acid, widely used as a preservative, intermediate, and pH adjuster in a variety of industries. Benzoic acid occurs naturally in many plants and resins and is industrially produced by oxidation of toluene. It is known for its antimicrobial and antifungal properties, making it a key ingredient in food preservation, pharmaceuticals, and personal care formulations.
Applications:
1. Food & Beverage Industry Used as a food preservative (E210) to prevent growth of bacteria, yeast, and molds. Common in acidic foods and beverages such as soft drinks, fruit juices, and pickles.
2. Pharmaceuticals & Cosmetics Used in ointments, creams, and medicated products for antifungal and antiseptic properties. Intermediate in benzoyl peroxide, benzocaine, and other pharmaceutical compounds.
3. Chemical Industry Intermediate for production of alkyd resins, plasticizers, and dyes. Used in synthesis of benzyl benzoate and benzoate esters.
4. Rubber & Plastics Acts as a curing agent and stabilizer in rubber and PVC formulations.
5. Laboratory & Analytical Use Utilized as a reagent and calibration compound in chemical analysis.
