Description: 

Acetophenone (C₆H₅COCh5) is a colorless to slightly yellow liquid with a sweet, pleasant, aromatic odor similar to orange blossoms. It is the simplest aromatic ketone, composed of a phenyl group linked to a methyl ketone. It serves as an important intermediate in the manufacture of fragrances, pharmaceuticals, resins, and solvents. It also occurs naturally in some fruits and is widely used in the perfume and flavor industry for its characteristic sweet scent. 

Applications: 

1. Fragrance & Flavor Industry Used as a fragrance ingredient in soaps, cosmetics, and perfumes. Imparts a sweet, floral, and almond-like odor. Used in flavor formulations for foods and beverages. 

2. Pharmaceutical Industry Intermediate for antihistamines, hypnotics, and sedatives (e.g., phenmetrazine, amphetamines). 

3. Resin & Polymer Manufacturing Used in synthesis of styrene resins, cellulose ethers, and coatings. 

4. Solvent Applications Acts as a solvent for plastics, resins, and cellulose derivatives. 

5. Chemical Intermediate Starting material for production of ethylbenzene, acetone derivatives, and substituted ketones.
