Acetonitrile (ACTN)
Category
Polar Aprotic Solvent / Industrial Chemical / Analytical Reagent
Description
Acetonitrile (ACTN) is a clear, colorless, low-viscosity, highly polar aprotic solvent with excellent solvency for a wide range of organic and inorganic compounds. It is widely used in chemical synthesis, separation science (HPLC), pharmaceuticals and battery electrolytes due to its stability, low nucleophilicity and good volatility. Acetonitrile is flammable and toxic; industrial handling follows standard solvent safety protocols.
Applications
- Analytical & Laboratory: HPLC solvent, GC diluent, sample preparation and extraction
- Pharmaceuticals: Reaction solvent for synthesis, crystallization media and API manufacturing
- Chemical Synthesis: Polar solvent for nitrile chemistry, organometallic reactions and intermediate processing
- Electronics & Batteries: Electrolyte component in lithium-ion battery formulations
- Polymer & Coatings: Solvent for resins, adhesives and coatings
- Industrial Processes: Extraction solvent, reaction medium and solvent for fine chemicals

Storage & Handling
- Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area away from heat, sparks and open flames.
- Use explosion-proof electrical equipment and grounding/ bonding during transfer to avoid static discharge.
- Keep containers tightly closed and protected from moisture for high-purity grades.
- Avoid inhalation and skin contact — use appropriate PPE (chemical-resistant gloves, goggles, face shield, and suitable respirator if ventilation is inadequate).
- Work in fumehoods or ventilated enclosures for laboratory uses; control vapour accumulation.
- Flammable liquid — follow local fire & hazardous material regulations for storage and transport.
- Dispose of waste and contaminated packaging according to local environmental and hazardous waste regulations.
Hazard Note
Acetonitrile is flammable and toxic if inhaled or ingested; prolonged or repeated exposure may cause adverse health effects. Consult the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) before use and follow all regulatory and workplace safety requirements.
